It’s an understatement to say that times have changed since the last time we shared some business best practices, just before the COVID-19 pandemic began. And while some things have remained the same–the need for a stellar website, an eye-catching logo, and clear, straightforward communication come to mind–it’s now crucial to reassess the old way of doing things so your business can succeed in this new normal.

Businesses that are currently thriving took early decisive action, and many shifted or expanded their usual approaches and offerings to meet the needs of today’s consumers. Step up your email marketing. If you’re accustomed to trade shows and networking events where you can hand out business cards and brochures and schmooze with others in your industry, you may feel that your lead generation has taken a hit. But fear not, email marketing can be just as effective as in-person confabs, especially when your leads are likely spending hours in front of their computers and smartphones, just like you.

Get back to the basics of email marketing and be sure there’s a reason for your mission. Plan out a well-designed campaign with colorful graphics, clear messaging, and a call to action. Don’t forget to personalize your email with your target’s name or a note about why he or she might be interested in what you’re offering.

Be of service. If you’re reading this blog post, you either have a business or are thinking about starting one, which means you have something to offer customers. If you can afford it, offer some of your goods or services for free or at discounted rates so you can help your customers weather this storm. Forging a relationship based on trust and mutual goals now will likely carry into the future.

But there’s no need to wait for customers or clients to ask you for help. Reach out with a personalized email or pick up the phone and offer up your services. Some customers may need you but are too overwhelmed or cash-strapped to ask for help. If you’re not in the position to offer discounted services right now, just call to check in. Clients and customers should know that you see each of them as a person, not just an account. They will remember it.
