How I Started My Small Business: The Journey of J2 Design

Transitioning from the corporate grind to small business ownership wasn’t without its challenges. Along the way, I learned many valuable lessons that made a significant difference in how I run my business today. Here are some mistakes I made and the important insights I gained:

1. Start as an S Corporation
One of the first steps I took was setting up an S Corp. This structure offers beneficial tax advantages and helps organize the business professionally from the start. I used LegalZoom to help me start it — they took care of all the paperwork, making the process straightforward and hassle-free.

2. Run Payroll Through SquareUp
Running payroll can be daunting, but I discovered that SquareUp’s payroll service is just $41 a month. It’s worth every penny because it handles your quarterly taxes automatically — no surprises or hefty yearly tax bills.

3. Always Ask for 50% Upfront to Start a Project
Requesting a 50% deposit before beginning work ensures commitment from both sides. It helps with cash flow and shows the client is serious, which avoids wasted time and resources. I’ve been burned many times by doing work ahead of receiving payment, only for the client to disappear. I ended up completing all the work with no compensation — a costly mistake I’ve learned to avoid.

4. The Client’s Needs Come First
Though I have my preferences and ideas, ultimately the client is king. You can try to reason your perspective, but it’s essential to prioritize their vision to build a successful partnership.

5. Ensure the Client Is Happy at the End
Happy clients lead to referrals, which are crucial for any small business. Going the extra mile to make sure they’re satisfied pays off big in growing your reputation.

6. Get Your Business on Google Business Profiles
Visibility matters. Being on Google Business Profiles helps potential clients find you and increases credibility.

7. Encourage Clients to Leave Reviews on Your Google Profile
Positive reviews build trust and improve search rankings. Don’t hesitate to ask satisfied clients for a quick testimonial.

8. Showcase Your Portfolio on Your Website
A strong portfolio is your proof of expertise. Always keep your website updated with your best projects to attract new customers.

9. Use Tools Like Copy AI to Help with Writing
I’m not the best writer, so I use Copy AI to craft professional-sounding emails and communications. It saves time and ensures my messages are clear.

10. Follow Up with Past Clients Regularly
Keeping in touch with previous clients helps maintain relationships and can lead to repeat business or referrals down the line.

Starting J2 Design and Marketing was a leap of faith, but with these lessons learned the hard way, I’m now able to do what I love while being there for my family. If you’re thinking about starting your own small business, I hope my experience helps you avoid some common pitfalls and sets you up for success!
